Growing old gracefully is all well and good if you actually age well. Most of us, including those who claim to be growing old gracefully, make concentrated efforts to actually stay looking slightly younger than what we really are. What few people realize is that, while lotions, potions, and cosmetic procedures are incredibly efficient, your lifestyle, and particularly your diet, are far better at helping you stay young. Eating healthy keeps you slim, strengthens your immune system, and can also make your hair glossier, your skin shinier, and your nails stronger. Let’s take a look at some of the lifestyle choices you can make in order to take at least 10 years off your actual age.
It will come as no surprise that regular exercise should be a staple part of a healthy lifestyle. It may be surprising, however, to find out just how big of an effect it has on your age, according to a new study.
Our study showed that for older people, getting regular exercise may be protective, helping them keep their cognitive abilities longer.
Unfortunately, not just any exercise will do. According to the study, it must be ‘moderate’, which includes things like running and swimming. Unfortunately, yoga, bowling, golf, and walking don’t count. The study, which was highly comprehensive, involving 900 people over a nine year period, was conclusive: those who exercised regularly (doing the right exercise), had far better cognitive function than those who didn’t exercise regularly.
Get Rid of Coffee and Drink Oolong Tea Instead
Coffee is a controversial subject. We have been told again and again that excesses of caffeine isn’t good for us. Plus, coffee has a tendency to stain the teeth, which really does nothing for you. However, another study has conclusively demonstrated that drinking four cups of coffee per day has a significant positive impact on your liver, particularly if you also eat a very fatty diet. What is better, however, is to switch to a healthy diet, get rid of the coffee, and drink Oolong tea instead.
Oolong tea might just be the most powerful of all the antioxidant sources. Make the change from coffee to IM Oolong Tea over several months.
Making the switch slowly is very important, particularly if you consumed quite a lot of coffee before. That is because, unbeknownst to you, you will have developed a caffeine addiction. As a result, if you were to go cold turkey, you will likely experience a few negative side effects, including headaches. Hence, by lowering your coffee consumption while simultaneously increasing your green tea consumption of a period of weeks or even months is the best way to be successful.
Avocados are a true super food. However, an avocado is also very fatty, so you need to make sure that you don’t eat too much of it. However, there are other ways for you to get the benefits of the avocado. Eating it, however, has the greatest benefits of all.
According to Paula Simpson, BASc, RNCP, the oil found in avocados works to toughen your skin, while also hydrating it. Another perk? Avocados are full of monosaturated fatty acids. This is the healthiest type of fat for the cardiovascular system because it doesn’t promote inflammation.
So yes, you can have that gorgeous dip of guacamole every once in a while. They key is every once in a while because, although the fatty acids are healthy ones, they are still fats, which means lots of calories. But here is where avocado becomes really special, particularly as an anti-aging products. You can simply mash up the avocado, just as you would to make guacamole, and apply it to your skin as a relaxing face mask. The benefits just keep on coming!
Get Your Hair Right
Ok, so getting your hair right doesn’t mean you’re technically changing your lifestyle. However, a little cheating never hurt anybody, and you would be surprised at the effect your hairstyle could have on your overall look.
It’s all about the hair. Wear hair at a length (just above shoulder length) that is feminine; boy short cuts are really ageing as is waist length over 35! Fringes and layers around the face can hide a multitude of ageing signs, as does a good warm colour. With age lighter hair is softer and more forgiving. Steer clear of jet black locks as they add years to the face.
Other little cheats include wearing the right clothes, focusing particularly on your heels. If you wear just a small heel, you will instantly elongate your legs, and long legs look young. Also, don’t wear too much makeup, as that will make it look as if you are concealing something. Instead, use a few natural tones here and there, making it look as if you’re actually not wearing any makeup at all. You’re guaranteed to get a good few compliments that way.
Last but not least, there is garlic. Garlic is, in its own way, also a super food and should be part of everybody’s diet. Don’t let people fool you into believing that garlic stinks, or that it makes your breath or sweat smell bad. Most people enjoy the smell of garlic, for starters, and it doesn’t linger on your breath or skin as long as naysayers would have you believe. Plus, it is a fantastic anti-aging product.
Eating a clove of garlic a day helps keep cancer and heart disease away. A 1994 study in Iowa suggested that women who ate a clove of garlic at least once a week were 50% less likely to develop colon cancer. Another study in India found that garlic reduced cholesterol levels and was more effective at blood thinning than aspirin.
So there you have it. You don’t have to have Botox, skin rejuvenation, or even a facelift. Yes, those methods work, but they are painful, expensive, and full of risks. Instead, you should focus on making yourself healthy inside and out, through diet and exercise, and that will instantly make you look younger as well.
