If you were to take a look at the shelves of any health store or drug store, you will notice scores of weight loss products. There are pills, natural supplements, drugs, bars, shakes and more. All of them claim to either help you melt fat away, or at the very least give a boost to any other efforts you are already making yourself.
How Diet Pills Work
Three mechanisms are usually employed by diet pills. The first is to help reduce your appetite, which means you feel fuller more quickly and for longer. This means you will consume fewer calories. The second is to stop your body from absorbing all the nutrients you give it, particularly fat. The third and final mechanism is that it increases your metabolic rate and/or fat burning properties.
So are there any products that are supported by scientific evidence? In fact, there are many. Below are the three most popular weight loss products that have been scientifically proven to be effective.
Garcinia Cambogia Extract
This became popular after it was discussed in 2012 on the Dr Oz Show.
Dr. Oz calls it “The newest, fastest fat buster.” A way to lose weight without “spending every waking moment exercising and dieting.” “Triples your weight loss.” “The most exciting breakthrough in natural weight loss to date.” Oz claims that “Revolutionary new research says it could be the magic ingredient that lets you lose weight without diet or exercise.”
However, it is important to understand that scientists believe these claims are greatly exaggerated. Nevertheless, they are aware of the fact that the fruit’s skin contains HCA or hydroxycitric acid, and this has been scientifically proven to be beneficial. HCA has been shown, in animal studies, to inhibit fat production and to heighten serotonin levels.
A human study with 130 people was then conducted, but the group that took Garcinia cambogia did not lose more weight than those who took a placebo. Further studies show that average weight loss of around 2 pounds can be expected by taking the drug for several weeks, which is minimal. However, it barely has any side effects, which add to its popularity.
Hydroxycut has existed for a long time now and has long been one of the top weight loss products in the world. The product contains a number of plant extracts, including caffeine, that are said to aid weight loss. Unfortunately, an official warning had to be released because, while the product did indeed lead to a 21 lbs weight loss over just three months on average, it also led to liver failure, which had been fatal in some cases.
FDA has received 23 reports of serious health problems ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, an indicator of potential liver injury, to liver damage requiring liver transplant. One death due to liver failure has been reported to the FDA.
Finally, there is caffeine. This is actually a psychoactive substance that almost everybody in the world takes. It is naturally found in dark chocolate, green tea and coffee, but it is also a popular additive. Caffeine is believed to boost metabolism, which is why it is often included in various weight loss products. Additionally, some research suggests that caffeine can indeed lead to some modest weight loss.
Caffeine may slightly boost weight loss or prevent weight gain, but there’s no sound evidence that increased caffeine consumption results in significant or permanent weight loss.
This is a vital point, as many people have started to drink more coffee in the hopes of losing weight. This, however, does not work. On the other hand, if taken properly, caffeine can boost metabolism by between 3% and 11%, and it can improve fat burning by as much as 29%.
