What Is Metabolism?
Metabolism basically is the rate at which our body burns calories or converts stored fat into energy. This means that the higher your metabolism, the faster you shed those nasty calories. It’s a known fact that everybody has different metabolism rates. Two women of the same height and weight have different metabolic rates because of the inherent characteristics that the women possess.
That’s restricted to our natural metabolic rate though. I remember how much I used to complain about the slow metabolic rate I had until I started looking for ways to increase my metabolic rate naturally by changing certain aspects of my diet and fitness regime. Today I’m sharing some of these gems I uncovered while transforming myself from fat to fit!
4 Ways To Increase Metabolism
Eat 6 Meals A Day
Eating smaller meals every two hours, totally comprising of six meals in a day is a great way to boost your metabolism rate. Providing your body with food every couple of hours would signal the body not to “hoard” any food and burn fat at a faster rate because the body knows that you’re getting a fresh supply of energy every two hours. On the other hand if you decide to skip meals and not eat for long hours your body does the exact opposite due to which you’ll end up having a slow metabolism rate! It will start hoarding food because your body is not sure when it’ll get food again.
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
A study conducted proved that three days in a week of high intensity interval training (HIIT) can increase your metabolism for sustained periods of time, up to 24 hours after you finish exercising. So rather than hitting the treadmill every day and setting the speed to 5.5 mph and then forgetting the speed button, try interval training for three days a week to boost your metabolism rate. Three days of HIIT training is said to give better results than training at the same level for long periods of time.
Pro Tip: Most of the new treadmills, elliptical trainers and cycles come with the interval training feature built-in. If your cardio machine doesn’t have it, don’t fret, you can still do it manually. The main aim of the workout routine is to workout at a very high intensity for a short burst and then alternating that with a low intensity workout for a short period. Repeat this cycle for a 30 minute cardio workout and you’re done for the day! Eg. Walk on the treadmill at 3.5 mph for two minutes and then run at 7.5 mph for one minute. Repeat the cycle 10 times to complete 30 minutes. Once you do this for a couple of weeks gradually increase the time you run to two minutes and tweak the workout (any cardio workout for that matter) as per your capacity, keeping the concept of HIIT in mind.
Drink Green Tea
Ever wondered how the Chinese are so slim and trim? Green tea is a major part of their diet. They consume more than three cups of green tea a day which is one of the reasons why they’re so healthy and fit. Research has shown that green tea not only has anti-oxidant properties but also boosts your metabolism rate. Consume one cup before every meal to keep yourself fit and detoxified.
Drink Cold Water
This is probably the simplest way you can boost your metabolism rate! It’s as simple as drinking your water cold. When you drink cold water your body requires heat to maintain its core temperature. In order to do that your body needs to supply heat which in turn leads to the body burning fat.
