How Iodine Can Boost Your Thyroid Naturally


Your thyroid is more important than you think. If it’s not working properly, it can actually wreak havoc on all areas of your body. You can gain significant amounts of weight without even trying, you could find your hair thinning or falling out, or you could just be plain exhausted all the time.

While there are medications that can help regulate your thyroid, the truth is they’re not your only answer. There are plenty of ways to naturally boost your thyroid and prevent all these unwanted side effects and symptoms. One of the best? That’d be increasing your iodine intake.

Iodine & Your Thyroid

Iodine is crucial to your thyroid’s function. In fact, without enough iodine, the thyroid is actually unable to produce T3 and T4 – vital hormones your body needs. When you have enough iodine, your thyroid is able to properly manage your metabolism, detoxify your system and keep your body at a fit and healthy weight.

Luckily, there are some great iodine-rich foods you can eat to up your intake. Some of the best ones are:

  • Cranberries – Just a mere 4 ounces of these little tart berries come with a whopping 400 mcg of iodine. You can also get iodine from drinking cranberry juice.
  • Strawberries – Strawberries are another fruit that come packed with iodine. Every cup has about 13 mcg, or about 10 percent of your daily value.
  • Yogurt – One serving of yogurt can deliver half of your daily recommended amount of iodine. Add some fresh berries on top, and you’re covered.
  • Cheese – Cheese – as well as milk, eggs and other dairy products – are good sources of iodine as well. The best option? Cheese made from goat’s milk. It has more calcium and protein, and it’s easier for your body to digest. If you decide to include dairy in your diet, my recommendation is to choose organic and low fat products, to prevent increasing your risk of other health issues as well as to avoid gaining beans
  • Navy beans – These are one of the best natural iodine sources around, with 32 mcg in just a small, half-cup of the stuff. An added bonus? They’re super high in fiber, which makes them a great choice if you’re looking to lose weight.
  • Seaweed or other vegetables from the sea, including kelp, arame and wakame. Kelp actually contains the highest amount of iodine in the world, with a whopping 2,000 mcg in just one tablespoon.
  • Potatoes – When it comes to veggies, potatoes are one of the greatest iodine sources there is. Just a medium sized one has a whopping 60 mcg of the stuff! Just make sure to leave the peel on; that’s where a big chunk of the iodine comes from.

Not getting enough iodine doesn’t just hurt your thyroid, but it can also cause problems in other areas of your health, too. It can weaken your immune system, lead to lethargy and fatigue, and it can even cause anxiety, depression and other mental issues.

Other Natural Thyroid Boosters

Eating iodine-rich foods isn’t the only way to treat a sluggish thyroid. If you suspect your thyroid may not be functioning as well as it could be, there are tons of other natural ways to give it a boost as well.

Here are some of the best one:

  • Hit the sauna – Heat can actually help detoxify your body, cleansing you of any stored toxins that may be present. These toxins often interfere with your hormones, as well as your thyroid, and removing them can be a great way to give your system a boost.

  • Jump around – Called “rebounding,” jumping up and down a little bit each day can actually get your blood flowing and encourage your lymphatic system to drain. So pull out that old trampoline and get to it!
  • Cut out alcohol and caffeine – Both of these chemicals are stressful for your body, and they can cause a hormonal imbalance when consumed regularly. Try cutting them out (or at least reducing them significantly) if you want to see your thyroid make a turn-around.

Don’t underestimate the power of sleep either. Your body needs sleep to recover from the day, and not getting enough can cause serious health problems, affecting your weight, your mood and, you got it, your thyroid. So always make sure you’re getting enough sleep – and clear time in your schedule to hit the hay a bit earlier if you need to.
