How Glutathione Benefits Your Weight Loss and Overall Health


You might not know it, but there’s a hidden antioxidant floating around in your body right this very instant. In fact, it’s actually in every single one of your body’s cells, and it’s one of the most important influencers on your health, your weight and your overall wellness.

It’s called glutathione, or GSH, and it’s a tripeptide that occurs naturally. It’s also available as a supplement, and it’s been known to have hundreds of health benefits – from treating chronic fatigue, boosting the immune system and even fighting off cancer.

What is Glutathione?

GSH is a naturally-occurring protein that protects cells, tissues and organs from free radicals, toxins and diseases. It contains three important amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. Together, these acids help to repair cell damage – damage caused by radiation, pollution, stress, infection and more.

In the body, glutathione is produced in the liver, and it plays a vital role in your cellular metabolism. It’s also crucial for proper immune function, and it helps to detoxify the body and the blood.

Even though you might not have heard of it, according to more than 90,000 scientific articles, GSH is absolutely vital to your health. In fact, some experts believe it’s just as important as oxygen, food and water – at least on a cellular level.

Glutathione can have immense benefits to your health. It can alleviate muscle and joint pain (especially for arthritis suffers), slow down the aging process and even strengthen your immune system and help you fight off infection, disease and other bacteria.

GSH can also:

  • Increase your energy – Glutathione helps your cells remain fully charged, so you enjoy high energy and great endurance all day long.
  • Detoxify the liver and the cells – GSH is the body’s biggest antioxidant. It removes toxins from the cells, organs and systems, and it’s especially effective at getting rid of carcinogens, heavy metals, pesticides, radiation and more.
  • Improve your skin’s clarity and complexion – GSH is known to improve not just your complexion, but the overall health of your skin, too. It can even boost growth of hair and nails, too, and give you a radiant glow you haven’t had since your teens. GSH has also been proven to reduce the incidence of sunburn; so if you’re a beach bum, upping your GSH levels might not be such a bad idea!

Glutathione can also improve your cognitive abilities, boost focus, increase concentration, help you sleep deeper and more soundly, and fight off stress and anxiety. It’s also particularly effective at warding off degenerative diseases and fighting off wrinkles and fine lines in the face.

Additionally, another great way GSH can help you is seen after a workout. It has been known to actually boost athletic performance and make recovery easier. In the long run, that means more lean muscle mass gained and a higher resting metabolism, so you can burn more calories and lose more weight even when at rest.

Getting More Glutathione

While you could take a supplement, you can easily up your glutathione intake through food. Onions, garlic, walnuts, avocado, poultry, egg yolks, raw milk, turmeric, asparagus, red meat and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli are all high in HSH, and they can even help your body produce more GSH naturally from within. If you opt to take a supplement, choose one that allows you to get between 10 and 20 grams per day. If you’re very ill, have an autoimmune disease or suffer from HIV/AIDs, you may want to up your intake to 30 to 40 grams per day. You can also opt for a liposomal glutathione, which is applied on the skin, usually over the thyroid area. It still should be supplemented with a high-GSH diet for the best effects, though. There is also a supplement called N-acetyl-L-cysteine, which can naturally increase your body’s GSH levels, and you could also take vitamin C supplements, as this vitamin is known to actually protect GSH levels and keep them intact.

Your Natural GSH Levels

Though your body makes GSH on its own, sadly, many environmental factors can impact its production. Poor diets, toxins, pollution, medications and even stress can decrease or even deplete our glutathione stores completely. For this reason, finding a way to supplement these, or get GSH through food, is absolutely crucial.
