On top of its high fiber content, carob is also extremely low calorie. It contains only a mere 13 calories in every tablespoon. That’s a whopping 17 times less than the same amount of chocolate! Carob is also very high in selenium. Just one cup of carob flour boasts about 5.5 micrograms of selenium (or about 10 percent of your recommended daily intake). As selenium is crucial to healthy thyroid function, which supports your metabolism and your body’s ability to break down fats, consuming high-selenium carob can improve weight loss results significantly.

Some studies have even shown that regular carob intake can prevent lung cancer, polio, osteoporosis and other adverse health problems.

If you’re avoiding caffeine, try swapping carob powder or roasted carob seeds for your coffee grounds, and you’ll have a delicious, hot morning treat.

Carob chips can also be consumed either on their own or in other meals. They’re a great substitute for chocolate chips, and they’re delicious on a bowl of oats or in salads. You can even melt the chips and drizzle them on fruit, raisins, homemade trail mix and other healthy snack items.

The juice of carob plants can also be consumed. Though this isn’t very tasty on its own, you can mix it into green smoothies so that you can take advantage of all of its benefits.
