Women will be sad to hear that their taunts against men were actually unjustified. What they often scathingly referred to as “man flu” has turned out to be real. It seems, in other words, that it has been found that women are in fact not the weaker sex, but this position actually belongs firmly to men.
Research has demonstrated that men are more susceptible to respiratory illnesses, including coughs, colds, pneumonia and more. According to Harvard University scientists, estrogen, the female sex hormone, creates a stronger immune system. Because men do not have estrogen in significant amounts, they are more likely to suffer from such diseases. The results have been explained by Professor Lester Kobzik.
Ultimately, this work could be especially useful in reducing risk of secondary bacterial pneumonias during seasonal or pandemic influenza. We were quite pleased that the work led us to NOS3-targeting drugs that are already available and that can indeed improve resistance to pneumonia in our mouse model.
Essentially, the study, which is the second of its kind, showed that a single dose of estrogen was able to cure mice, regardless of their gender, of bacterial pneumonia. This is due to the NOS3 (nitric oxide synthase 3) enzyme, which is activated when estrogen is released.
Essentially, it was discovered that estrogen could accelerate the recovery of mice infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae. This was further confirmed when the gene response for NOS3 was removed, and the mice immediately lost their resistance to infection.
Scientists hope that this discovery will be beneficial in helping people to build up greater resistance to the common cold, the flu and more serious respiratory infections. Ultimately, it could mean that fewer people will die of these types of illnesses overall. Additionally, it could lead to less time off work as well.
For individuals, however, it means something else. Women all over the world know that there is nothing worse than a man with “man flu.” They hide under the covers with pitying sounds of sniffles and coughs, feeling as if they have been struck down with the worst illness in the world. For women, this is annoying for two reasons. The first is that women have colds quite frequently and simply do not feel ill enough to warrant that type of behavior. This is the element that has now been blown out of the water by scientists. Apparently, men actually do feel a lot more ill than what a woman does.
The second reason why women are annoyed, however, is because they simply never have time to be struck down by any type of illness. There are bills to be paid, a household to take care of, chores to be done, children to be looked after and more. A woman, in today’s society, is simply unable to be off because of sickness, and certainly not for the “common cold.” One woman worded it really well.
It just really annoys me that if I were ill life still goes on as normal but if they’re ill all has to stop and everyone has to do what they want.
As such, it seems that men are still on the losing streak now. Yes, it may have been scientifically proven that they are the weaker sex and that, therefore, they are more likely to get ill and that their illnesses feel marginally worse. However, until they learn that they will simply have to deal with those feelings, shape up, get up and meet their normal responsibilities, they will get no sympathy from women. Man flu, although scientifically real, simply continues to be a description of how men act like toddlers as soon as they are infected with something as simple as the cold virus.
Remember to share this article with all the women you love so that they can also discover the truth behind the “Man Flu”.
