When I was a little kid, I always looked forward to summer.
School was out… we had time to hang out with friends… and were able to enjoy the pool and the beach.
It was a great time.
And now that I’m turning 40… well, nothing’s changed.
I still love the summer!
I love that my daughters are off from school, so I get to spend more time with them.
I love the get-togethers with friends…
And I love going to the beach.
Summer is a fun time.
The only problem is…
If we aren’t careful, summer can be an easy time to start packing on the pounds.
Those friendly barbeques tempt us to eat a lot of unhealthy foods.
With the sun pounding down on us, we always find ourselves feeling thirsty. And whether it’s a cold beer or some iced tea, those drinks we use to quench our thirst can really add up.
But don’t worry…
The beautiful weather doesn’t have to be bad news for your body.
You just have to follow a few tips to survive the summer without packing on the pounds.
One of the most important tips is to stay hydrated.
Nothing will cause you to pack on the pounds faster than dehydration. It slows down your metabolism and makes your body store fat easier.
To keep that from happening, you want to become real close friends with your water bottle.
Carry it everywhere you go.
Not only will it keep you from getting thirsty. But you’ll never feel desperate to start drinking those sugary drinks that end up fattening your waistline.
Another tip is to eat small meals throughout the day.
This gives your body the fuel it needs to burn fat. It keeps your metabolism working at its full fat-burning potential.
Plus, by supplying your body with a constant stream of nutrients, you won’t ever feel like you’re starving… which is a recipe for disaster when you’re around the unhealthy foods you’ll find at barbeques.
Which brings me to our last tip…
While you can (and should) enjoy yourself at these BBQs, you still want to make healthy eating choices whenever possible.
This means grilled chicken instead of a hamburger.
And when it comes to alcohol, if you’re going to drink, you want to stick to clear alcohols and avoid those sugary mixed drinks (which are incredibly high in calories).
Follow these tips. And I promise you, you’ll be able to enjoy your summer… without regretting it in the fall!
