But that changed when Dr. Oz decided to tout this exotic green fruit as the most exciting breakthrough in the world of natural weight loss, and since that proclamation garcinia cambogia supplements have been flying of off shelves constantly.
Also sometimes known as tamarind, Garcinia cambogia is native to Indonesia, and is also grown in Southeast Asia and some parts of Africa. It has been used for decades to make curry and chutney in south Indian dishes.
How does Garcinia Cambogia work?
According to experts, Garcinia Cambogia works by curbing the appetite, which off course leads to weight loss. The active ingredient in this fruit is Hydroxycitric acid which is predominantly found in its rind.
According to one study, hydroxycitrate strongly inhibits citrate cleavage enzyme, which makes the conversion of carbohydrates to fat harder for the body. It is also said to increase the level of neurotransmitter serotonin which regulates eating behavior and controls appetite.
Note that, most of these studies however used rats as test subjects. When it comes to humans, there weren’t any statistically significant weight loss observed.
One research study wanted to look at the effectiveness of Garcinia cambogia when it came to weight and fat loss in overweight subjects. The participants where 135 overweight men and women who were randomly divided into either hydroxycitric acid or placebo group. Also along with the pill, note that all the participants were given a high fiber, low energy diet. Both groups completed 12 weeks of treatment. Results showed significant weight loss in both groups, but when compared with each other the difference in weight loss was not statistically significant. This means that Garcinia cambogia failed to produce more fat and weight loss than placebo group.
In another study with 89 slightly overweight female participants, half were prescribed 400 mg of Garcinia cambogia, while the other group members were give placebo pills. The study lasted for 12 weeks. Results showed that both group observed weight loss but between groups, no significant appetite reduction was observed.
Is Garcinia Cambogia Safe?
Garcinia cambogia supplements are not recommended to those who have diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or women who are pregnant or nursing. People who are on any kind of antidepressants or cholesterol lowering drugs should also avoid taking this supplement.
In a 2005 study, high dosage of Garcinia cambogia was shown to cause testicular shrinkage and toxicity in obese male rats. There aren’t many research done on the side effects of Garcinia cambogia supplements on humans. So until then, there is chance for side effects.
Also, it is important to note that when taken in its true, whole, fruit form, Garcinia cambogia can be very healthy. After all, it is rich in iron, calcium, phosphorous, niacin, riboflavin and thiamine. But because it is mainly grown in Indonesia, it can be hard to find in the West. Due to this, most people opt for supplements. The amount of Garcinia cambogia each pill pack contains varies depending on the brand. Know that many manufactures use only a small amount of this actual fruit, while filling up the rest with other lower quality ingredients.
Is Garcinia cambogia extract worth it: Verdict?
Unfortunately the answer is no. From the minimum amount of research studies available on this supplement, you can see that garcinia cambogia extract fails to produce significant weight loss. If you do take garcinia cambogia, you will lose weight, but the moment you get off the pills, as with every other diet, the weight will come back with full force.
