GMO refers to the foods that are produced from organisms whose DNA has been modified in some form using the techniques of genetic engineering. The proponents of GMO foods say that this is the only way to feed the ever growing population, especially when malnutrition runs rampant in the world.
But once you realize the real horror GMO food can cause to your body, you will find yourself paying a little extra to get the organic version.
The Real Danger of GMO foods:
1. Immobilizes Nutrients-
Most Genetically Modified crops are sprayed very heavily with glyphosate, which is not only an herbicide but it also immobilizes the nutrients present in crops. It makes the nutrients physiologically unavailable for our body to use. Research shows that exposure to pesticides, especially Glyphosate, can increase your risk for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymph tissue. When inhaled, it has also been observed to have cytotoxic and DNA damaging effects.
More importantly, glyophosate inhibits the Cytochrome P450 pathway which basically helps create CYP enzymes that aid the breakdown and formation of certain molecules in the cells. For example, CYP enzyme Aldosterone maintains blood pressure, and enzyme aromatase converts androgen into estrogen. CYP enzymes also help eliminate xenobiotics, which are toxic compounds like carcinogens and drugs, from our body.
2. Organ Damage and Tumors-
There are several studies that have linked GMO with organ damage. In one such experiment, three different varieties of GMO corn – NK 603, MON 810, and MON 863- were fed to the rats. The results that GM maize induced hepatorenal toxicity. They found that the health of kidney and liver- our body’s two main detoxifiers- was compromised. Another study confirmed the previous hepatorenal toxicity finding, and it also showed that in MON853 fed female rats, the triglyceride levels increased by 24-40%, and in males, their phosphorus and sodium excretions in urine by 31-35%.
A new research on Monsanto’s GMO corn, where rats were fed a lifelong diet (2 years) of Genetically modified corn showed an increased incidence of aggressive and grotesque mammary tumors, kidney and liver damage, with almost 70% of the female rats dying prematurely compared to just 20% in the control group.
3. Alters Our Digestive Health-
Research shows that the genetically modified organisms stay in our digestive tract and reproduce like the other bacteria. One study showed that the genetic material in genetically modified soy gets transferred into the DNA of the bacteria in our digestive tract and it continues to live and produce GE proteins within us, even after we stop eating GM foods. Those GMO’s with antibiotic resistant marker, can promote the spread of antibiotic resistant diseases.
Studies have found that 93% of unborn babies have GM food toxins in their bloodstream. This comes from the livestock that are fed genetically engineered corn, and gets transferred to humans when they consume meat, eggs and milk. It has been speculated that pesticide residues, especially Bt toxins, once in our body, these can cause allergies, cancer, miscarriages, autoimmune diseases and other abnormalities. Plus, because the blood brain barrier is not completely developed in newborn, these toxins can enter the brain giving rise to cognitive problems such as autism.
It can also cause leaky gut syndrome where the intestinal lining swells up, damaging the microvilli, and preventing the absorbing of nutrients, and secretion of important digestive enzymes.
4. Disrupts Our Reproductive Health-
Glyophosate can disrupt our endocrinal functioning which can cause birth defects, miscarriages and infertility. For fetuses and babies to develop properly, it needs a balanced and well-functioning hormonal system. But research shows that glyphosates in food, when tested on lab animals, can produce babies low birth weights, and fewer births. In one study done on hamsters, GMO soy caused completely sterility after 3 generations.
In another study, Siepmann et al presented a case of a 19 year old male type 1 diabetic, who experienced sudden onset of erectile dysfunction and low sex drive after consuming large amount of soy based products while on a vegan diet. What they found was that soy based consumption was related to both erectile dysfunction and hypogonadism. It is very likely that the soy mentioned in this study was genetically engineered.
Educating yourself about the dangers of GMO foods can save the lives of your family and friends. Imagine, because of the widespread availability of modified foods, people are getting affected with every meal. It is important to make sure that what you shop is not filled with chemical fertilizers, synthetic hormones, antibiotic or GM organisms. When you start polluting your system with toxins, that’s when you begin to become a target for dangerous diseases.
